Eucalyptus tree falls and crushes several cars in a Sun Valley neighborhood

Overnight showers and strong winds caused damage and flooding Monday in the northern San Fernando Valley.

City of Los Angeles crews responded to reports of flooding, downed trees and downed power lines in connection with the fast-moving tropical storm.

There have been at least 150 tree-related problems and 17 minor mudflows, authorities said.

An elderly couple had to be evacuated after the oak fell.

In Sun Valley, a large eucalyptus tree fell on cars parked outside a house. No injuries were reported. Daylight showed the tree on top of a crumpled metal fence and crushed cars.

Water pooled at a stretch of the 5 Freeway and an intersection Monday in Sun Valley, stranding vehicles in the water.

All lanes were blocked early Monday on the southbound 5 Freeway in Sun Valley due to flooding on Lankershim Boulevard.

About five vehicles were stranded in high water at 7:34 p.m. Sunday in the 11000 block of West Sherman Way at Hershey Drive.

LAFD firefighters helped a person escape from the vehicle as waters continued to rise from Tropical Storm Hilary.

Hilary was downgraded from a tropical storm into the post-tropical system on Monday as it left southern California and entered Nevada.
