In a joint letter, the major factions in the European Parliament called on the EU Commission to take action against a homophobic law in Hungary. The letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which is available to the German Press Agency, says that recent developments in Hungary are contributing to the deterioration of fundamental rights and democracy in the country.
The corresponding Hungarian legal text provides, among other things, that citizens can anonymously report same-sex couples who are raising children together. Surprisingly, Hungary’s President Katalin Novak blocked the law on Friday.
“We believe that these provisions, once implemented, pose a serious threat to LGBTIQ people’s rights and freedom of expression,” the letter said. The letter was signed by the Conservatives, Social Democrats, Liberals, Greens and Leftists.
