Event marks start of school year in Miami-Dade

At an event to mark the start of the school year, the school superintendent celebrated the accomplishments of Miami Dade schools, acknowledged the challenges they face and claimed to have ways to overcome them. The superintendent called for everyone in the system to stick together to work and keep their focus on the good of the students.

At a time when the priority for state government is giving families choice in education, the Miami Dade school system has an answer.

“We are campaigning to let our community know that we are the best educational choice for them,” says Dotres.

The superintendent of schools affirmed that the level of graduates increased from 89 percent before the pandemic to 92 percent, and that in all assessment tests students have exceeded the state level.

But he noted that the impact of the pandemic is still being felt, according to national studies with a 5-6 month learning lag.

“We are going to have interventions we are going to have tutoring to make sure that we are helping these students to progress.”

The new school year begins with more than 20,000 immigrant students who enrolled last year and await the arrival of more

“We have made specific programs for what are called “newcomers” the student who has entered the country for the first time to speed up the procedure and so that they can betray our community”, says Dotres.

And they’re also expanding resources for parents. Adult programs that include English classes have increased by 40%. And they ask that they use all the resources that the schools offer.

The teacher shortage, he said, is a nationwide crisis. He confirmed that they have hired 618 new teachers and is starting a new academy program to encourage students to enter the profession from a very young age.

Teaching academies will open in 51 high schools AND receive college credit.
