According to the authorities, the Attorney General of Bulgaria escaped an assassination attempt unscathed. According to the prosecutor’s office, an explosive device exploded on the road on Monday morning when Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev’s convoy of vehicles was driving by on the way to Sofia. It was an “attempted murder, not just intimidation,” said Geshev’s deputy Borislav Sarafov.

Geschew has been controversial for years. During months of mass protests in 2020, the demonstrators not only demanded the resignation of then Prime Minister Boyko Borissov due to corruption, but also that of the Attorney General. Geschew is accused of protecting high-ranking politicians from corruption investigations and of having obstructed investigations. His term of office runs until 2026.

Longtime Prime Minister Borisow was voted out in 2021. Since then, five elections have each resulted in fragmented parliaments, with neither party able to form a functioning government. The last election was in early April. (AFP)
