The Fairphone makers from the Netherlands are expanding their product range in the coming weeks to include over-ear headphones that have the same high standards as their smartphones, which have been available for years. They should offer easy repairability, but at the same time be in no way inferior to the “normal” products of other manufacturers in terms of quality and performance.

It remains to be seen to what extent this concept can be applied to the Fairphone FairBuds XL. The pictures available to us, which, as is so often the case, were posted online by an online retailer before the manufacturer’s official presentation date, show the Fairbuds XL in the expected black and green colors. The housing shells of the two earphones are each made of the same recycled plastic that was last used on the Fairphone.
The Fairphone Fairbuds XL…
… are made of recycled plastic

It is therefore easy to see from the mixed-in “speckles” of differently colored plastic particles that recycled material is used here. The easily accessible screws make it clear that the focus is on easy repairability, so that components can be easily replaced if they should break. The battery of Fairphone’s Bluetooth Overears, which communicate wirelessly with the host device, should also be easy to replace.

… for easier transport
Unfortunately, we still do not have any concrete information on the general technical data of the Fairbuds XL. Obviously, the headphones only have a USB Type-C connection, but not a jack connection. The pictures also show that the headphones can probably be operated with a kind of analog joystick, although it is unclear whether there is no gesture control using touch-sensitive surfaces on the ear cups.
According to information that has surfaced earlier, the Fairbuds XL will likely retail for €249, a fair bit cheaper than the more expensive premium headphones from manufacturers like Sony and Bose that are hugely popular.
