In an interview with the television station phoenix, the FDP politician Linda Teuteberg called for improvements to the planned new law on naturalization. “We are opposed to lowering the language requirements in general,” said Teuteberg on the sidelines of the FDP party conference in Berlin. The granting of German citizenship is the result and goal of successful integration, it is “not an advance payment for integration that has not yet taken place”. It is therefore important to the FDP that sufficient knowledge of the German language, compliance with the law in the sense of impunity and the ability to make a living are still prerequisites for obtaining German citizenship. “Anyone who meets these requirements is very welcome to apply for German citizenship,” says Teuteberg. According to the FDP, easier naturalization for older migrants should only be possible for older guest workers who have worked and lived in Germany for a long time, but have not had the opportunity to learn the German language.
