It is the most important film prize in Austria: the Romy was awarded in Vienna on Saturday. Otto Waalkes received a special award.

How does it feel to receive a lifetime achievement award? “As if it’s over now,” joked Otto Waalkes on Saturday evening in an interview with t-online. Shortly thereafter, the comedian went to the hall of the Vienna Hofburg. The Romy Awards took place there for the 34th time

Jella Haase and Anke Engelke, neither of whom were present, received the award for best actresses. Julia Beautx cleared in the “female discovery” category, Klaas Heufer-Umlauf and Joko Winterscheidt, who also stayed away from the award, received a trophy for their entertainment shows.

The most important award, however, went to Otto Waalkes. The 74-year-old received the platinum Romy for his life’s work. “Only a few are able to make people laugh like that – and that across generations. That alone deserves – especially in times like these – every price,” the organizers had justified the choice in advance.

When Waalkes entered the stage, the hall rose: standing ovations. “For me, life’s work is a bit like: ‘Now there’s nothing more. Now it’s over.’ But I’m like, okay, I’ve gotten a little bit older…” the comedian said.

An Oscar winner was also among the winners. Brendan Fraser received an international special Romy just before the theatrical release of his film “The Whale”. The Canadian-American actor spoke at the gala about the Austrian ancestors in his family tree and received great cheers.

The Romy is considered the most important film and television award in Austria. The prize was created in 1990 in memory of the actress Romy Schneider who died in 182. Since then, the award ceremony has taken place in Vienna every year.
