After a recent update, Microsoft’s “Edge” browser apparently transfers all URLs accessed to an API of the Bing search engine. According to current knowledge, this is a bug and not a feature, but it is related to one. Edge is affected from version 112.0.1722.34. Microsoft is aware of the issue and is investigating.

The data flow was noticed first Developers on Reddit. According to this, Edge calls an API on the Microsoft-owned domain bingapis.com for almost every website and transfers the full URL of the website visited.

According to a report by The Verge, the unwanted behavior is related to a new Edge feature that Microsoft has been testing for the past year. With “Creator Follow” users can follow certain authors, youtubers or influencers. Edge then gives a hint when there is new content from the subscribed people – and also makes suggestions for new subscriptions.

The suggestion function was apparently implemented sloppily and now sends requests for each website to the API. The function is activated by default and can be switched off in the browser settings (under “Services”, “Creator suggestions”). Then Edge no longer sends URLs to the API, it says at The Verge.

Microsoft is aware of the reports, a spokeswoman told the US magazine. “We are investigating and will take action to address any issues.” The company did not provide any further information on the function of the API and the transmitted data.
