Fecal bacteria detected on Galveston beaches

HOUSTON – Thousands of people are expected to visit Galveston Island to enjoy this long weekend. However, this time caution should be exercised. And it is that the eyes are on the levels of “enterococcus”, a bacterium that mostly comes from fecal matter and that, according to experts, can cause serious health problems.

According to Mona S. Hochman, a senior research associate at Texas A&M University, this bacterium can pose risks, especially for patients with sensitive medical histories. Although these levels are normal for beaches and are caused by the heavy rains experienced recently, all the water from the canals and bayous ends up in the sea. Therefore, it is very important not to enter the water, especially if you have any open wounds.

Doctors warn that this bacteria can cause infections, especially in patients with cancer and diabetes.

The Texas Land Office has provided an interactive map where you can find the areas marked in yellow that pose a moderate risk to enjoying the waters in Galveston. If any area is marked in red, simply do not swim in that area. To see the map click here.

Given this situation, it is important that visitors are aware of the risk levels and take the necessary precautions.
