  • EDEKA’s own reusable system for out-of-home consumption is successfully launched nationwide
  • With regood, EDEKA is further expanding its own commitment to sustainable packaging
  • Environmentally friendly and recyclable reusable containers that can be used at least 500 times

After the regood reusable system was launched nationwide by Germany’s leading food retailer EDEKA on January 1, 2023, regood cups and bowls were awarded the renowned Blue Angel environmental certificate today. The Blue Angel was presented by Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke in the EDEKA Center No. 1 in Berlin-Steglitz. On site, the Federal Environment Minister acknowledged, among other things, the sustainability aspects of the system, which led to the certification with the environmental seal.

The avoidance of packaging waste has been the focus of the EDEKA association for years. If avoidance is not possible, EDEKA relies, among other things, on reusable instead of disposable. This is also the case with the newly introduced regood system for out-of-home consumption. When developing the containers, EDEKA attached great importance to various sustainability aspects, which is why regood now receives the Blue Angel for particularly environmentally friendly products.

“We need a real trend reversal in the handling of packaging. Its consumption has been increasing for years. The new obligation to offer reusable products can make a decisive contribution here. Many restaurants and cafés, but also caterers and canteens have already switched over at an early stage. Nobody has to accept more disposable plastic, when food or drinks are taken away, because consumers now always have an environmentally friendly alternative. Reusable systems such as ‘regood’ work and offer great added value for the environment. This is also shown by today’s Blue Angel award. Reusable with the Blue Angel it is clear that the products are durable and environmentally friendly,” said Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke at the official award ceremony.

Claas Meineke, who accepted the Blue Angel award on behalf of EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG as Director of Marketing and Sales, is pleased both with the appreciation associated with the certification and with the lighthouse function for customers: “At EDEKA, we have valued the independence and credibility of the Blue Angel for a long time. The certification of our regood reusable system with the Blue Angel confirms our pioneering role in practical environmental and resource protection in the German food retail trade. The clear orientation of the seal for our customers suits us very close to my heart,” says Meineke. The Blue Angel enables EDEKA to present the environmental benefits of regood in an eye-catching way.

regood reusable packaging can be reused at least 500 times

With the regood deposit system for reusable packaging, EDEKA offers an easy-to-implement and attractive solution for customers to reduce packaging waste when buying fresh dishes and drinks – such as at the salad bar or the hot counter. The recyclable mugs and bowls in various sizes and attractive designs are made in Germany and suitable for microwave and dishwasher. They are issued in the participating EDEKA and Marktkauf stores against a deposit value. After use, the containers can be returned there against reimbursement of the deposit value. In the stores, the containers are cleaned according to food hygiene guidelines and can therefore be reused more than 500 times.

EDEKA – Germany’s most successful business initiative

The profile of the medium-sized and cooperative EDEKA association is based on the successful interaction of three stages: nationwide, around 3,500 independent retailers give EDEKA a face. At the retail level, they take on the role of local suppliers who stand for food quality and enjoyment. They are supported by seven regional wholesalers who deliver fresh goods to the EDEKA stores every day and are also at their side from sales to expansion issues. The EDEKA strategy is coordinated at the EDEKA headquarters in Hamburg. It controls the national goods business as well as the successful “We love food” campaign and gives a variety of impetus for the realization of cross-association goals. With its subsidiary, Netto Marken-Discount, it is also setting successful trends in the discount business. Specialist trade formats such as BUDNI or NATURKIND, cooperation with online-based delivery services such as Picnic and bulk consumer business with EDEKA Foodservice round off the wide range of services offered by the group of companies. In 2021, EDEKA achieved sales of EUR 62.7 billion with over 11,100 stores and around 405,000 employees. With around 19,900 trainees, EDEKA is one of the leading trainers in Germany.
