Feds arrest accused of kidnapping Dominican migrants in San Juan

The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Joseph González, announced the arrest of two people who allegedly were engaged in transferring and holding captive migrants from the Dominican Republic who arrived illegally on the Island.

The defendants, identified as Iris Janette Nieves Rios and Junio ​​Melo, allegedly left them locked up inside a residence located on Calle Esquilín in San Juan and asked their relatives for money to release them.

Federal authorities obtained images from Nieves’ cell phone showing how the hands and feet of one of the migrants were tied with a rope.

Both people face kidnapping charges. The case is being prosecuted by prosecutor Jonathan Gottfried and Linet Suarez. He is also being thoroughly investigated by the FBI’s Violent Crimes Office in San Juan.
