Benjamin Göntgen from Mülheim was seriously injured at the Field Hockey World Championships in India. That happened.

The World Cup quarterfinals between South Korea and the Netherlands (1:5) ended for the Mülheim referee Benjamin Göntgen with great pain.

Göntgen was hit in the face after a corner from the Koreans, which was unluckily deflected by a Dutch player.

Referee breaks his cheekbone

The referee, who whistles for RTHC Leverkusen and now lives in Aachen, staggered briefly and then fell to the ground. He sustained a broken cheekbone and a gash.

For Göntgen, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Wednesday, the tournament should be over. He recently made his 500th appearance in a first or second division game in the indoor hockey Bundesliga.


At the World Cup in India, he had been on the field several times during the tournament, but also worked as a video referee.
