At least 12 inmates have been killed in a prison in Ecuador. The bodies had gunshot wounds, the Attorney General of the South American country wrote on Twitter today. Another three inmates of the detention center on the outskirts of the city of Guayaquil were injured. The incident will be investigated and those responsible will be determined.

The newspaper “El Universo” reported, citing prison director Ronald Sanchez, that there were probably clashes between gang members among the prisoners over the use of firearms. This would have lasted about four and a half hours. According to the SNAI, the prison was under control after a tactical police unit was deployed.
