In the Kray district of Essen, the roof structure of a warehouse on “Am Zehnthof” street caught fire on Thursday (February 2). Fire department spokesman Christoph Riss spoke at noon of a “massive smoke development”, a cloud of smoke was widely visible in the city and caused a stir. The street “Am Zehnthof” had to be completely closed in both directions. The result: impairment with traffic jams in large parts of the road traffic in Kray.

Shortly after the fire became known at midday, a corresponding warning was sent to all surrounding residents via the “Nina” warning app. Windows and doors should therefore remain closed if possible, it said.
Essen fire brigade finds numerous hemp plants
In order to be able to start extinguishing the fire on site, the emergency services first had to force their way into the apparently empty building, doors were broken open to do so. There were various things in the warehouse, but one find is now occupying the criminal police. As Christoph Riss reports, “numerous hemp plants” were found in the building by the firefighters. Investigations into the find have been launched.
When most of the fire could be extinguished in the late afternoon, post-extinguishing work began in Kray to extinguish any embers. The Essen emergency services received support from the Dortmund fire brigade. This moved out to Kray with a so-called “telescopic mast”. With this device it is easier to extinguish fires from a dizzy height than with a turntable ladder, explained Christoph Riss: “You can get into the roof area better with the telescopic mast.”
It is still unclear how the fire in the “Am Zehnthof” warehouse could have happened, no one was injured. According to the Essen fire brigade, around 80 people were on site at the peak of the operation.
