Fire stations offer sandbags in the face of heavy rains from Hurricane Hilary

Since Hurricane Hilary’s passage into southern California was announced, authorities have been warning residents to exercise caution and stay home if there is no need to go out next Sunday and Monday.

The hurricane has reached a Category 4 rating on the west Pacific coast near Mexico and has dumped several inches of rain and flooding in its path.

When it reaches Southern California, the hurricane is forecast to become a tropical storm, but even so, this system is expected to drop 3 to 6 inches of water and up to 10 inches in isolated areas in different parts of Southern California, including the mountains.

Due to expected rains, the Los Angeles Fire Department provides sandbags year-round, and in some seasons sand is also available.

Remember that sandbags are primarily for diverting (rather than damming) moving water, redirecting storm flow and debris away from property improvements.

The Fire Department may issue up to 25 empty sandbags per household, but the department will not be able to fill, deliver, install, or remove the sandbags.
