A sexton was killed and a priest seriously injured on Wednesday evening in a machete attack on two churches, located a few hundred meters from each other, in Algeciras, in southern Spain.

Lhe alleged perpetrator of the machete attack which caused the death of a sexton in Algeciras on Wednesday evening had “terrorist intentions”, according to the conclusions of the first report of the judge of the Madrid court of the National Audience relayed Thursday by several Spanish media.


The document, cited in particular by the public television channel RTVE, mentions that the suspect, a 25-year-old Moroccan, had “links with jihadist Salafism”. Before the attack, he reportedly shouted that “the only religion to follow is Islam”.

It was also revealed that, contrary to what had been previously declared, the alleged perpetrator was “under the radar” for radicalization. According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, the young man had also been in the process of being deported since June for an irregular situation.

The suspect will appear in court on Monday. The prosecution requested that he be remanded in custody.
