Danone has successfully completed the audit process of the independent non-profit organization B Lab in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The B Corp certificate is one of the most demanding in the world. Companies must meet strict social and environmental standards and be re-certified every three years.

As the first of the top 10 food manufacturers, Danone is fully B Corp certified in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH). Danone announced this today during a press conference at the International Green Week, the world’s leading trade fair for food, agriculture and horticulture in Berlin. With the last outstanding certification for the division of early childhood and medical nutrition (Nutricia), Danone has now received the certificate earlier than expected and thus two years before the internationally set target in 2025.

The B Corp certification is awarded by B Lab, a non-profit organization founded in 2006 that has now certified over 6,256 companies in more than 89 countries. There are already 163 companies in the DACH region. The award is considered to be particularly comprehensive and demanding: The corporate structure and the entire social and ecological performance along the entire value chain are examined in an extensive process. Behind this is B Corp’s expectation that entrepreneurship obliges. The aim should be not only to generate profits for partners and shareholders, but also to add value to society. Companies should act in an ecologically sustainable manner. Only around half of the companies that strive for certification manage to reach the 80-point mark and thus receive the certificate.

B Corp’s approach is in line with Danone’s philosophy of combining commercial success with social and environmental responsibility. For more than five decades, this Danone commitment, also known as “Double Projet” (Double Project), has been deeply embedded in everything the food manufacturer founded in France does. “With the B Corp certification, we are taking the next logical step and committing ourselves to considering the impact of our decisions on all interest groups and strategically including them in our planning,” says Nadine Küster, Director Legal, Sustainability and Communication at Danone DACH. “I am very proud that our long-standing and extensive commitment to sustainable management has received this outstanding seal,” Küster continues. “Danone, for example, works with the German UNESCO Commission for Water Protection, optimizes packaging, especially with regard to the plastic content, and is committed to reducing sugar, fat and energy in fresh milk products.” By 2025 at the latest, Danone plans to achieve B Corp certification for all business areas worldwide.

The B Corp certificate has been gaining in importance and recognition internationally for years. Iris Lapinski, Executive Director at B Lab says: “It is a special success for us to work closely with an international company like Danone. With the full certification of Danone in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, we are confident that we can achieve even more in the future We are working to ensure that other companies will follow Danone’s example.”

B Lab sees itself as a movement whose members, the B Corporations, jointly drive the change to a more sustainable, social and fair economy. “Consumers who choose products or services from a B Corporation are helping to support not just that company, but a growing movement,” says Iris Lapinski.
