Forget a Red Dead Redemption movie and GTA coming soon: Take-Two thinks he has a lot to lose and little to gain

After the success of well-received productions such as The Last of Us on HBO and Super Mario Bros. The Movie, we might think that other companies would jump headlong into making adaptations of their own products. The truth is that’s not the case with Take-Twothe parent company that owns Rockstar Games.

It was during the last call with investors, revealed by PC Gamerwhen CEO and president Strauss Zelnick has pointed out that projects related to movies and television series are not exactly a panacea.

“It’s a really tough business, and we’re not going to bet the future of this company or the value of our intellectual property on running another area of the entertainment business. So we’re going to continue to be very selective, actually.”

And it is that, according to Zelnick, we are talking about productions that represent a “relatively small” economic opportunity and history has shown them that it is not the way to go. “There are many, many failures where money was lost“, says the head of Take-Two. However, there is work underway.

2K Games is another of the firms that are under the company’s umbrella and it is from there that the Borderlands and BioShock movies emerge. Zelnick has pointed out that they do not rule out any path, but that they must have “a very selective approach to the granting of licences”, so the most prudent thing to do will be to study each case to determine if there is “a creative imperative and an economic opportunity”.

An absolute flop for Take-Two in movie theaters was Max Payne in 2008. The film starring Mark Wahlberg it has a 5.3 on IMDb and 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, although at least its box office grosses more than doubled the budget it cost to make it.
