Former Austrian chancellor accused of false testimony in investigation

The indictment filed in the Vienna state court points to Kurz, his former chief of staff, Bernhard Bonelli, and another unidentified person, the prosecutor’s office that investigates corruption cases said in a statement. The court indicated that Kurz will stand trial on October 18.

The charges stem from an investigation launched in 2021, when Kurz was serving as chancellor, and center on his statement in a parliamentary inquiry into alleged corruption in his first government, a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party that collapsed in 2019. .

Kurz dismantled that alliance after the appearance of a video showing Vice Chancellor and leader of the Freedom Party at the time, Heinz-Christian Strache, apparently offering favors to an alleged Russian investor.

In the corruption case, Kurz is accused of offering false evidence regarding his role in setting up a holding company, OeBAG, which manages state participation in some companies.
