After the shooting, the woman fled to her ex-boyfriend’s home on 174th Street and 142nd Street, triggering an intense police operation.

Miami-Dade Priority Response and Special Response Teams evacuated neighborhood residents around midnight, while negotiations with the defendant began. The conversations went on for more than 14 hours, with times when she cooperated and others when she resisted.

“Hours later, we had negotiations with her, sometimes she cooperated and we thought she was going to leave and then she didn’t cooperate, finally we were able to take her into custody, but she resisted until the end,” added the Miami-Dade deputy police chief, according to AmericaTeVe Miami.

The person involved was identified as Evelyn Fernández, a retired Miami-Dade police lieutenant with a prior arrest history in 2016 for burglary of an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief. At that time, Fernández was ordered to stay away from her then-boyfriend, former Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Álvarez.

Charges against Fernández are being evaluated, but it is expected that he will face charges of attempted murder due to the shots fired, Cordero Stutz explained. The victim is a retired officer from another police department.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
