In recent years, the EU has taken on an increasingly important role in the defense of democratic values - both inside and outside the EU, e.g. when it comes to the principles of the rule of law, freedom of expression, the fight against disinformation and hate and threats. Russia’s war against Ukraine is fundamentally about values, and the Ukrainian people have chosen to fight for freedom, democracy and European community. However, the struggle is not only Ukraine’s – no one can claim that their country and national debate are forever safe from authoritarian tendencies.
