Samsung seems not to have conquered some of its old demons. Indeed, the Korean brand has renewed on its Galaxy S23 a controversial feature of the Galaxy S22. We explain to you what it is all about.

Last year, the Galaxy S22s were at the center of a controversy because of a feature dubbed “Alternative Gaming Performance Management”. The latter is unfortunately still present on the Galaxy S23. What affects the performance of Samsung’s new high-end smartphones?

Performance or autonomy, Samsung wants you to choose

In 2022, the Korean manufacturer created a controversy with a feature that affected the performance of its smartphones. This “Alternative Game Performance Management” option was enabled by default. It was then presented as a software optimization that limits the CPU and GPU performance of the phone’s main chip in games.

The objective for Samsung was thus to prevent its smartphones from overheating while preserving autonomy by giving games only the performance “necessary” to function. An optimization that was not very well received by some users who found that it could not be deactivated, thus limiting the potential of high-end smartphones from Samsung, such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The latter is, remember, equipped with a (more or less) powerful chip depending on the region: the Exynos 2200 in Europe and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the rest of the world.

Faced with the controversy, Samsung rolled out an update that gave users the option of disabling this feature by going to “Game Booster Settings > Labs”.

We could therefore expect Samsung to remove this feature on the Galaxy S23, but this is not the case. The phones are however equipped with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, the efficiency of which we have tested, both in terms of performance and energy consumption.

To everyone’s surprise, we still find this option on the Galaxy S23, with one difference: it is now deactivated by default. This means that an optimization is applied directly by Samsung, and it is possible to unlock the full performance potential of the S23s by activating this option. If you choose to do so, Samsung still warns you:

“Use an experimental game performance management system that can improve game performance to some extent. This system tends to cause overheating. »

Leaving the choice is a good thing, but it also raises questions about the level of performance and autonomy that the Galaxy S23 will be able to deliver when this function is activated or not. We will not fail to do the test in our 01Lab to clarify this gray area.
