Mexico City.- Gerardo Islas, a 39-year-old politician from Puebla and national leader of Fuerza por México, died this Thursday while he was in Spain.

Preliminary reports indicate that he died of a heart attack on a trip in which he was accompanied by the founder of the party and leader of the Catem union, Pedro Haces.

“I express my deepest condolences to my friend Gerardo Islas, on the death of his beloved son Gerardo,” revealed Ignacio Mier, coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies.

Just last Tuesday, he met with his counterparts from the PES, Hugo Eric Flores, as well as from the RSP, Fernando González, to announce that they would decide in the coming days which coalition or party to support in the elections for the governorship of the State of Mexico.

“Unfortunately, the news of the death of Gerardo Islas (@gerislas), a good friend and committed politician. My condolences to his wife, children and relatives in the face of this unexpected loss. Rest in peace,” said Senator Ricardo Monreal.

In 2020 he married Claudia Wade, with whom he had two children, Gerardo and Matías.

Islas Maldonado was the leader of the Fuerza por México party, founded by the controversial CATEM union leader, Pedro Haces.

Originally from Puebla, the businessman was also a local deputy in the Puebla State Congress for District XXII, between 2018 and 2021.

He also served as parliamentary coordinator of the New Alliance Party, where he was previously a member.

In 2010, he served as public relations coordinator in the campaign for the governorship of Puebla of the late Rafael Moreno Valle.

A year later, he was deputy general coordinator of the campaign of the then PRI candidate for the Government of the State of Mexico, Eruviel Ávila.

He also participated in the campaigns of Marcos Covarrubias, in Baja California Sur; Angel Aguirre, in Guerrero; Alejandro Moreno, in Campeche, and Omar Fayad, in Hidalgo.

In 2013 he was a candidate for multi-member local deputy for the Nueva Alianza party and, two years later, he was appointed delegate of that political force in the fourth constituency.

He was Secretary of Social Development of Puebla, in 2016, in the Moreno Valle Administration.
