The Signal building, located in Soulac-sur-Mer in Gironde, is emblematic of global warming and coastal erosion. It was completely destroyed on Monday February 20.

In Soulac-sur-Mer (Gironde), a last section of wall of the building of Signal collapsed, Monday, February 20. Passers-by came to see the steel jaws gradually nibbling at the concrete. This building is a symbol of erosion, a memory of years of legal imbroglio. A resident of Soulac-sur-Mer whose house is opposite the location of Signal says he saw the building and the waterfront being built, before seeing them today being destroyed.

“Rebuilding the dune environment”

Today, Xavier Pintat, the mayor (LR) of Soulac-sur-Mer, wants to look to the future. “We are going to reconstitute the dune environment to have a beautiful dune garden in the city center, where we can discover the fauna and flora on one belvedere, and on another, face the ocean”he explains. As it bows out, the Signal reveals the distant horizon of the ocean. The future is now more serene for Soulac-sur-Mer, even if the fight against erosion continues.
