After years of gossip, Ridley Scott has finally made it official, confirming that he’s definitely working on it. Gladiator 2. A news welcomed with joy by the fans who however showed some reservations. And for good reason, Maximus dies at the end of the film after defeating Commodus. Difficult to bring it back to life for a second opus, especially since the register of Gladiator is far from being fantastic.

One storyline brought Maximus back from the afterlife through the powers of the gods. But he had not been retained. It was also rumored that the sequel could focus on the son of Maximus. A hypothesis also improbable since it is crucified at the beginning of the film. Then remains the scenario centered on Lucius, the son of Lucilla who is none other the sister of Commodus. And it looks like Scott is headed in that direction.

What will the story be told in Gladiator 2?

On the podcast “Fitzy & Balado Wippa”, Russell Crowe confirmed that he will not appear in Gladiator 2. And to reveal details on the plot of its highly anticipated second part. This one will focus on Lucius who has developed a fascination with Maximus since his youth. It will be camped by Paul Mescal (Normal People).

“Yeah, we had dinner and talked about all that. So I know pretty much how he shapes the story“, said Crowe after his interview with Scott. “This young child grew up and became an emperor. I don’t know what else happens at that time but that’s the idea. So it’s not a remake. And it’s not a direct sequel. It’s not about the day after, you know, 30 years later or something like that”.

While the script has now been finalized, the entry into production should not take too long. Scott had promised he would get down to business after wrapping up Napoleon scheduled for release this year on Apple TV+. While the director and his team are busy poaching actors, new details on the sequel could be revealed very soon.
