The New Empire is the highest-grossing film in the United States

NEW YORK.- “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” easily edged out a pair of rivals to remain in first place in U.S. and Canadian theaters for the second week in a row, according to studio estimates Sunday.

After grossing $80 million in its opening last weekend, surpassing expectations, the giant monster movie grossed $31.7 million during its second weekend in theaters. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures release, directed by Adam Wingard, has so far outperformed any of the studio’s recent monster movies except 2014’s “Godzilla.”

But with around $300 million worldwide in two weeks, “Godzilla x Kong” could ultimately surpass the $529 million globally grossed by 2014’s “Godzilla.” .

Another primate-themed film was also released: Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man,” a Universal Pictures revenge thriller set in India, opened in 3,029 theaters in North America with an estimated $10.1 million.

That marked a strong debut for Patel’s modestly budgeted directorial debut, in which he stars in a bloody, politically charged action spectacle.

“Dune: Part Two,” from Warner Bros., continues to attract audiences. It added $7.2 million in its sixth week.
