At the beginning of Google I/O 2023, Google is celebrating its grand premiere for a large number of AI functions in its search engine and other services. The chatbot “Bard” plays a major role in this, and it will be made much more widely available with immediate effect – soon also in German.

As Google just announced at the I/O developer conference, the “answer to the Bing chatbot” called “Bard” will in future be available without a waiting list, even if the in-house AI-supported bot will continue to be “just an experiment”. Google plans to make Bard available in English in 180 countries and regions first, before adding support for other languages soon.

Google has also announced that Bard will soon be expanding “Bard” with a number of new features, including an image generator developed in cooperation with Adobe. There are also other new functions, including the integration of third-party services such as the shopping helper Instacart or the table reservation service OpenTable.

After a disgraceful performance at the start, Bard should now become more attractive

Taken together, with the innovations now announced, they want to ensure that Bard becomes significantly more attractive. The chatbot was launched a few months ago in a closed form, but this did not prevent the launch from failing terribly due to numerous negative reports about wrong answers and other errors. According to their own statements, Google only wants to offer a supplement to the normal search engine with Bard, but not create a replacement.

Bard is now based on the new “Large Language Model” (LLM) PaLM2, which also forms the basis for many other new AI features that are to be gradually introduced into Google’s other services. Thanks to the new LLM, Google Bard should be able to be a powerful helper when programming, among other things.

Bard can help programmers at work

According to Google, the bot can answer code queries, perform debugging tasks and explain snippets of program code, with more than 20 different programming languages being supported. Google has also given the service a number of smaller improvements that are intended to support and facilitate the handling of code, so that the code snippets should be transferred to external development environments, for example.

Bard will also be made more “visual” with the forthcoming update, so that the service will be able to analyze images, display images in responses to the user’s requests, and finally, as mentioned, thanks to Adobe’s support, images in response to requests to generate. Above all, one question remains unanswered: when and to what extent will the numerous innovations be available?

The same question arises with regard to broader language support. Although Google has announced that it will soon support more than 40 international languages apart from English, apart from the usual “soon” the company has not given any information as to when, among other things, German will be supported.
