Microsoft recently carried out a major round of layoffs affecting over 10,000 employees, but it turned out to be just a warm-up for what Google would do. On Saturday evening they revealed that they had laid off over 12,000 people.

In a blog posts writes CEO Sundar Pichai that they must respond to the poor economic situation caused by increased inflation, rising manufacturing costs, Russia’s war against Ukraine and other factors.

“This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with. I’m deeply sorry for that. The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.”

It is the largest round of layoffs in the company’s history, but everyone affected will receive 60 days’ notice, at least 16 weeks’ paid salary, six months’ health insurance and more.
