Apple apparently classifies the problems caused by the new HomeKit architecture as significant: The manufacturer has put the upgrade on an internal problem list, which is issued to its own stores, trading partners and repair centers, among other things, in order to be able to respond to customer complaints. Only serious hardware problems usually end up on the list, as reported by Macrumors.

As part of iOS 16.2, Apple delivered the optional upgrade to the new Home architecture, which could be installed via the Home app for several days. After a flood of problem reports, the manufacturer withdrew the update just before Christmas and promised to make it available again soon, but without naming a date. It is currently not available again.

Apple promised a fundamentally more stable architecture that should ensure greater reliability and performance, especially in houses or networks with a lot of smart home hardware. The upgrade requires that the latest operating system version is installed on all Smart Home control devices, i.e. iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2 and macOS 13.1. In addition, the new architecture only supports Apple TV and HomePod as the home control center, iPads can no longer be used for this.

The update could also cause significant problems for users who updated all their devices to the latest version, especially on the iPhones of partners and other family members who suddenly were no longer able to control the house and could not be invited to do so again. Users reported hours of tedious troubleshooting, which often ended without success.

The manufacturer recommends this in a support document that is only available in English, to remove all furnished houses on the devices invited users. Anyone who has configured other houses there with their own smart home devices should contact the company directly, it says only in a subordinate clause. Apple announced the new HomeKit architecture for iOS 16 in the summer. It is one of the most far-reaching changes to Apple Home – alongside independent support for the new Matter standard and the redesigned Home app.
