While Google is just about to launch the I/O developer conference, where it will showcase itself more than ever as a hardware vendor, there are now new rumors about the next generation of the Pixel Watch.

According to a report by Google, 9to5Google will launch a new edition of the Pixel Watch later this year. The so-called Google Pixel Watch 2 is said to be launching in parallel with the new high-end smartphones, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro – sooner than one might have expected given Google’s previous product policy in the smartwatch market.

October is considered the starting period

So far, smartwatches from Google – which previously only come from the subsidiary brand Fitbit – appear in new editions every two years. It was not until the end of 2022 that the Pixel Watch was introduced, its own smartwatch with the Wear OS operating system, which, like the Pixel smartphones, is based on Samsung technology. So far, the success of the Pixel Watch has been limited, because alongside Apple, Samsung continues to dominate the market. In the test, the Pixel Watch proved to be a solid first attempt.

Regarding the expected launch date of Google’s Pixel Watch 2 and thus also the new Pixel 8 series, it is currently assumed that the availability will be from October 2023. This assumption is based on the fact that Google has regularly launched its flagship products in October for the past few years. As far as possible improvements in the Google Pixel Watch 2 are concerned, there is plenty of potential, after all, the first model has the same chip that was installed in the Samsung Galaxy Watch in 2018. Samsung has now been using younger chips for two years, especially since the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1, at least theoretically, should form the basis of the next generation of Wear OS smartwatches, a much more modern SoC.

As for the Pixel Watch 2’s capabilities, there’s still a lot of room to play, too, because Google hasn’t even made all the promised features available on the first generation yet – nighttime skin temperature monitoring and blood oxygen saturation readings are still not available .

Summary

  • Google plans to release Pixel Watch 2 later this year.
  • Probably together with Pixel 8 series in October 2023.
  • Potential for improvement compared to predecessor.
  • Night time skin temperature monitoring & oxygen saturation display not yet available.
  • Google is presenting itself more than ever as a hardware provider.
