Google TV gets latency improvements between the remote and the device

In Google’s publication about the new update, it is said that Google TV will have its performance improved on devices that use remote control, where the latency (“waiting time”) to turn on the device will be improved, in addition to the response time between the button presses and on-screen actions. The company says:

“We’ve made updates to your devices and remotes to eliminate the wait time. We’ve reduced the time it takes to activate Google TV, the response time between the TV and button clicks on the remote, and the time you see the animation of charging when restarting the device.”

New Feature on Google TV: Auto App Hibernation

To optimize the processing usage of devices with Google TV, the new update brings an application hibernation feature. Now, apps that haven’t been used in the last 30 days will go into “sleep” mode, thus stopping their interference with the system’s operation. According to the information, it will be necessary to have a device with Android TV 12 or higher to be able to use the new functionality.

Decreased size of TV apps

Another change announced by Google is the reduction in the size of TV applications by approximately 25%. Starting this month, the transition to Android Apps Bundles (AABs) for Android TV will be mandatory. They were announced at Google I/O 2018 to replace Android Package Kits (APKs) as the publication format in the Play Store (Android app store). One of the benefits of this new format is saving on data storage.

Launch and availability

The new Google TV update that brings performance and storage improvements is now rolling out to everyone. However, keep in mind that this process takes a few days as new patches are always made available in “waves” format.
