Google is working on new ways to use artificial intelligence to improve the user experience for mobile calls, especially to block spam calls.

In a new episode of the podcast Made by Google, published on Monday (10), the product manager for the Google Phone app, Jonathan Eccles, revealed that the company is testing the use of conversational AI to enhance the features of Call Screen, or Call Screen, available on Pixel devices in some territories.

AI in phone calls

Google launched Call Screen on Pixel phones in 2018 as a protective measure against unwanted calls, with call filtering, information about why you were calling, and the ability to answer the call with the Google Assistant.

This feature already used artificial intelligence to combat spam and robot calls, but Google plans to expand the utility’s functions with the integration of new AI language models developed by the company.

It looks like Google will use LaMDA, which powers Bard, to improve the user experience with the phone app as well. According to Eccles, “Conversational AI can open a lot of doors in terms of creating that protective layer for all incoming calls.”

For the product manager, the goal with this product is to have a “future where you are never irritated by the idea of your cell phone ringing”. According to Eccles, spam calls affect concentration and “you should never feel ineffective or unproductive because of a call.”

During the podcast, Jonathan Eccles indicated that the new AI features will arrive in the Call Screen of the Google Phone app later this year, but did not give an exact date for that release. As the Pixel 8 is scheduled for October, it is possible that the company will take advantage of the moment to reveal the new features using artificial intelligence on the cell phone.
