For the youngest among us, the show The Great Bluff shouldn’t say much. It is, however,a cult show that revolutionized French television to the point of setting a record. On December 26, 1992, TF1 offered a unique program on its antenna: The Great Bluff. Host Patrick Sébastien disguised himself to be unrecognizable and pretend to be an anonymous contestant participating in a television show. No one was aware, not even the hosts of the programs in question who thought they were dealing with a real wacky candidate.

The Great Bluff: the audience record in the history of television

Patrick Sébastien thus trapped the greatest TV presenters of the time. Michel Drucker, for the show stars 90 Philippe Risoli with the Millionaire or even Jean-Pierre Foucault during a recording of Sacred evening were all trapped. And when the hearings fall the next day, it’s party time at TF1. 17.4 million viewers followed the programme, representing a 74% audience share. A staggering figure that still constitutes the record for an entertainment program in France. The show also had the record audience in France, all genres combined, until July 12, 1998 with the final of the Football World Cup which attracted 20.6 million viewers.
