“A film like this is highly anticipated by the industry. They are very friendly to me, they know that if it does not work, there will not necessarily be many others today in France“, affirmed Guillaume Canet, not without fear, in an interview given to France Inter during the promotion of the film. In his eyes, it was a certainty, Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom had to work at all costs to save French cinema. Result ? Certainly not the one he was hoping for. A flood of hatred tarnishes the image of the project. “This did not deserve to fall headlong into Guillaume Canet and Gilles Lellouche. There was some very good and some not so good. Yes, the film cost a lot of money. We had the right to expect more. But where does this hatred come from?“, reacted Gérard Darmon, who did not hide his incomprehension in an exclusive interview given to Tele-Leisure.

Eight months and 4.5 million admissions later, Guillaume Canet returned to the numerous controversies which surrounded his film. “It’s a different kind of cinema, with lots of special effects, huge sets, entire crowds to direct… I have a very positive assessment of it because I managed to make the film I wanted. When it came out, I went incognito into the theaters and I heard the laughter, the applause of the children and families at the end, that’s what was most important to me. Then, the film had great success abroad, almost three million admissions outside France. I feel like I won my bet.” he explains to Parisian. And for him, criticism is the risk of the job. He also indicates that he wants to devote himself again to more confidential productions which require less financial resources: “It never feels good… But at the same time, all films are like that. There, I think it’s a little more exposed because it’s Asterix and it takes on enormous proportions”. Then add: “But I never regret anything. Because with each project, I learn. Perhaps I would not have made my good films if I had not previously been saddened by my failures. On the other hand, remaking a big film which takes a lot of time, why not one day, but for now, I’m more interested in a very personal project or a thriller. That’s what I’m currently writing“.
