Fallen from a canoe on Sunday in Guyana during a mission against illegal gold panning, Guy Barcarel was found dead on Wednesday, announced the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

The Ministry of the Armed Forces announced on Wednesday that Warrant Officer Guy Barcarel, who disappeared after a canoe accident during an operation to combat illegal gold panning in Guyana, is dead. His body was found dead on Wednesday morning by the mobilized forces of the national gendarmerie and the armed forces of Guyana (FAG).

“I address my moved thoughts to his companion, his six children and his brothers in arms of the 3rd foreign infantry regiment (…) I pay tribute to the forces mobilized for his search, as well as to those who fight against illegal gold panning”, reacted the Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu in a press release.

The non-commissioned officer had been engaged in his regiment since January 1, 2016. He held the position of chief of boatmen at the advanced operational base of Camopi and had been promoted to warrant officer in January 2022.

An accident with “unfavorable weather”

Guy Barcarel was on Sunday aboard a canoe during a mission. “The boat hit a tree while operating at night in unfavorable weather. In shock, Warrant Officer Guy Barcarel fell from the boat,” the ministry said.

A gendarme, on patrol aboard the same canoe with other soldiers, was slightly injured, the gendarmerie said on Tuesday.

On March 25, a French gendarme, Major of the GIGN Arnaud Blanc, was killed while participating with nine comrades in an operation against illegal gold panning.
