University professor and psychiatrist Reinhard Haller spoke in “Vorarlberg LIVE” about the Causa Teichtmeister.

The case has shaken the country far beyond its borders: from February 8th, the Burgtheater actor and TV star Florian Teichtmeister will have to answer before the Vienna regional court. He is said to have hoarded around 58,000 files depicting sexual abuse of children on digital data carriers, according to the allegation. Court expert Reinhard Haller is an expert on five abuse commissions and deals intensively with the various roles of the perpetrators. At Vorarlberg LIVE, the court psychiatrist explained that there are different forms of pedophilia.

The really problematic group are “those people who are sexually oriented differently, who basically can’t help it and only feel pleasure when they see children as sexual objects,” Haller said. Ultimately, these are people who, on the one hand, are mentally ill and who need help and, on the other hand, if they act out this tendency, they will also become criminals because they cause harm to people, the expert explained.

For Haller, the real criminals are those who use the children for these recordings, who abuse them, or who lead them to rapists. But since it is difficult to get hold of them, the western world has decided to punish consumers because they promote the whole thing and turn it into a business. There are also indications that people who hoard child pedophilia on files also become manifest perpetrators somewhat more frequently. With 58,000 data carriers, one can also conclude that there is also a massive addiction problem.

“You can’t treat core pedophilia away,” continued psychiatrist Reinhard Haller. This is about how to deal with this disposition. Even an increase in the range of penalties does not change the situation. “The problem hasn’t been solved after his imprisonment. He’s still dangerous,” Haller said. That is why the psychiatrist advocates “therapy instead of punishment” as in the case of drug-related offences.
