Hajo Hinrichs, President, handed over today together with the German tree queen Johanna Werk Association of German Tree Nurseries (BdB) registered association., and Stefan Meier, President Tree of the Year Foundation, presented the Tree of the Year to the members of the Committee on Food and Agriculture of the German Bundestag.
During today’s committee meeting, the downy birch (Betula pubescens) seedlings were presented to its chairman, Hermann Färber, and his colleagues.
With the downy birch, the Tree of the Year Foundation selected the most cold-tolerant tree in Europe for 2023. The downy birch is characterized by the fact that it blooms after five to ten years, copes well with extreme climatic conditions and can live up to 80 years.
The presentation of the tree to the committee has been taking place for many years and its regularity underscores the fundamental importance of green for society. Not only is this undisputed, but it is constantly growing in proportion to the effects of climate change. So that the German tree nursery industry can continue to produce the highest quality worldwide, political decisions are necessary to make the tree nursery industry fit for the future. In a discussion with the committee, the BdB presented the steps that are essential for this: In addition to comprehensive research projects on how to deal with different groups of pests, the BdB calls for a federally funded endowed chair for woodland research and options for tree nurseries to be compensated by quarantine pests, which pose an existential threat to tree nurseries.
“The BdB is therefore calling for a federal endowed chair in the field of woody plant research. In view of the changing political framework in the field of plant protection, with regard to water shortages and new pests, scientifically sound research is necessary in order to maintain the high-quality production of tree nursery trees.”, explains Hajo Hinrichs, BdB President.
The Tree of the Year is selected by the Tree of the Year Foundation. Once a year, representatives of the members of the Tree of the Year Board of Trustees meet in Berlin in autumn when the respective annual tree is proclaimed, where they discuss and decide which three tree species should be proposed to the members for voting.
