Harassment and sexual violence against women grows in Coahuila

Almost six years after the Gender Violence Alert was requested in Coahuila, the National Survey of Urban Public Safety (ENSU) announced that sexual harassment and violence in the entity increased at the end of 2022, which became the year with the highest incidence.

In the data published in this survey, it was revealed that by the fourth quarter of 2022, at least 22.9 percent of women in Saltillo had faced sexual harassment or violence.

In Piedras Negras and in the municipalities of La Laguna, where Torreón is located, the rates are 23.2 and 23.9 percent respectively.

In comparison with 2021, this indicator has grown by more than five percent in all citiesbecause in the fourth quarter of that year the rates were 16 percent in Saltillo, 15 percent in Piedras Negras, and 23.1 percent in Laguna -where there was less increase-.

Although although the municipalities of Coahuila are located above the national average (22.1 percent), they are far from the leader Puerto Vallarta (with 33.8 percent) and the lowest level: Los Mochis (6.8%).

‘NEVER CEASING TO AMAZE THAT THEY PREVAIL’

Adriana Romo, a member of the Red de Mujeres de la Laguna, affirmed that It never ceases to surprise that the percentages of incidence of these problems of femicide violence prevailsince there is a lack of political will and of the public function to address it, or at least it seems so, since both resources and legislation have been allocated for its attention.

The activist recalled that in 2018, after requesting the alert in 2017, the National Institute for Women (INMUJERES) gave the Government of Coahuila an opportunity prior to issuing the Gender Alert in the entity, so that they comply with a series of recommendations in to eradicate and reduce violence.

Likewise, public resources were injected into it, which do not seem to reflect improvements, on the contrary, an increase in items such as family violence against women, femicide and harassment.

“Both this violence and femicide have been increasing. We see this in all femicidal violence. They said that they did not declare the alert because the Government complied with the recommendations, and then?“, critical.

He pointed out that although these data exist before the Inegi, the black number in denunciation of sexual harassment in the street, should be taking into account the experience, in almost 100 percent of the cases, since women fear to face the device bureaucratic in search of justice that will end without resolutions, and in the panorama in which it is sanctioned by administrative means, in many cases the police turn a deaf ear.

In addition, another situation that is highlighted is that the failures are mainly in the municipal governments -since prevention is a matter within their competence-, and these have even developed applications for women to report dangerous situations.

Nevertheless, These types of campaigns and programs stop working once another administration enters the City Council, as happened in Torreón during the transition between Jorge Zermeño and Román Alberto Cepedawhen the #AlertaVioleta application stopped working despite the resources invested in its development.
