Erdogan has to go to the runoff. What’s next in Turkey? A German Erdogan supporter also had his say in “Hard but fair”.

Quite a few had written off Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey’s elections on Sunday. In fact, it took some getting used to for the autocrat that he now has to go to a runoff election at all. With the new edition of “Hart aber fair”, Louis Klamroth wanted to find out how much support there is for the President in Turkey – and whether Europe can deal with him eternal Erdogan have to arrange.

“Hard but fair”: These guests were there on Monday

  • Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (FDP foreign policy officer, ambassador-designate in Moscow)
  • Deniz Yucel (Journalist)
  • Nalan Sipar (Reporter)
  • Ufuk Varol (Erdogan voter)
  • Fritz Schramma (formerly Mayor of Cologne)

Journalist Deniz Yucel speaks in the program of Louis Klamroth of a “devastating result”. He is just as reluctant to make predictions as journalist Nalan Sipar. “Anything can happen in Turkey,” she says. Green politician Danyal Bayaz thinks: “The runoff election is a sign that Erdogan’s power is crumbling.”

“Hard but fair” in the ARD: FDP politician admits mistakes in integration policy

The FDP politician Alexander Graf Lambsdorff speaks of the “most important election of the year in the whole world”. He was “extremely nervous about the next two weeks.” In his eyes, the election was not fair. So be for example Erdogan always present on TV, but his opponents would hardly be seen – and if so, then only in a negative context.

Fritz Schramma, as mayor at the time, campaigned for the construction of the Ditib Great Mosque in Cologne and looks at the around 1.5 million people who live in Germany but were allowed to vote on Sunday. “So many are in Germany in the democracy grown up,” he says. “Maybe we made mistakes as a society.” Alexander Graf Lambsdorff also admits mistakes in integration policy.

Erdogan voters on “hard but fair”: “Something has happened with Erdogan”

Ufuk Varol is one of those people. The 41-year-old was born in Cologne, has a Turkish passport and gave his voice to Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “If the people have elected a person in the last 20 years, then this person can’t be that wrong,” he says. With Erdogan “Something has happened,” says Varol.

German Turks would “still not feel completely accepted” in Germany. Ufuk Varol believes that democracy in Turkey is not as bad as it is portrayed in Germany.

Deniz Yücel finds out:Erdogan always respects the voters’ will when it suits him.” And the FDP politician Lambsdorff believes that Erdogan achieved a lot at the beginning of his term in office, “but he’s long gone”.
