During an interview I gave to the podcast Our Way with Paul Anka and Skip Bronson, Baldwin, who today faces a court battle over the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rush, He reflected on the days in which he let himself be carried away by substances and recognized that he has been sober for almost 40 years.
I don’t usually talk about this much. I tell it from time to time, when I think it makes sense to do so. I have been sober for 39 years. I became teetotal on February 23, 1985. I had a serious problem every day for two years. “I think I snorted a line of cocaine from here to Saturn,” he recalled.
Although the 66-year-old man did not delve into the reasons that led him to quit addiction, he did highlight that it was a difficult period of his life.
“Those two years that I lived in that white period, as a daily drug addict, as a daily drinker… were misery for me, boy, that was a difficult time… I really felt a lot of pain.
Step to abstinence
Baldwin explained that in that decade the substance was very popular in his environment, so consuming it was the same as consuming coffee. But strength helped him put it aside.
However, he acquired a new weakness: alcohol.
“When I left the drugs, My alcohol consumption increased, which they tell you usually happens. And it happened. I started drinking. I don’t miss drugs, but I do miss drinking. “I like to drink,” he admitted.
Although the actor does not address this episode constantly, in his memoirs he mentioned his journey through sobriety. “God made me sober. That day, God was a 65-year-old black retired postal service worker named Lenny. Lenny told me, ‘You’ll never have to feel this way again if you don’t want to.'”
In an interview with ABC News he also stated that he was proud of leaving drug use behind.
