In the event of repeated personal attacks on social media, the Federal Ministry of Justice wants courts to be able to have user accounts blocked under certain circumstances. As the ARD capital studio reported on Tuesday, citing key points for a “law against digital violence”.such blocks should only take place in the case of “serious violations of personality” if other options such as deleting a post are not sufficient and there is a risk of repetition.

The ministry initially did not answer a question about the plans. In the coalition agreement of the traffic light, however, it is already stated that account blocks ordered by a judge should be made possible.

The ARD reported that planned account blocks are aimed at “notorious infringers in the digital space”. The project is intended to help particularly in cases where it is not clear who is behind a particular social media profile. An account holder should therefore be informed of a blocking request by the respective platform and have the opportunity to comment. In addition, a profile should be able to be blocked “only for a reasonable period of time”.

According to the report, the key points also provide that the legal hurdles for those affected should be removed if they want to know the identity of the person who wrote a hate post. This is also indicated in the coalition agreement. It states that legal hurdles for those affected should be removed and gaps in the right to information should be closed.
