Debian 12.0 is to be released on June 10, as the developers of the Linux distribution have now officially announced. Users could expect the release called Bookworm for mid-2023, since Debian follows a two-year cycle and the predecessor Bullseye saw the light of day in August 2021.

According to the current plan, the so-called full freeze will take place on May 24th. This means that in this last phase of development, the project has to manually approve new packages for Bookworm. Such requests should be received by May 28th, in the last week before the release the developers only want to devote themselves to urgent bug fixes.

If you have the capacity, Debian asks you to test the upgrade from Bullseye to Bookworm. Associated reports, including any errors that occur, should be sent directly to the developers. All information on this and on the individual steps towards the final release of Debian 12 can be found here in the official announcement.

If the release is actually done, the Debian project also wants to organize its traditional parties with Bookworm: If you want to organize such a party or want to take part in it, you’ll find it on a dedicated page Further information. There will also be an online virtual celebration on the DebianPartyLine – the project’s mumble server.
