The tiger mosquito is identified in 71 departments, placed in red vigilance. 20 years ago, it was completely unknown in our latitudes, but little by little, this particularly harmful insect is growing almost everywhere.

It is a place that the tiger mosquito loves. The cemetery, its flowers and its bowls filled with stagnant water. So, in Souffelweyersheim (Bas-Rhin) in Alsace, we installed a bin with sand, near the graves. “This sand, you take it, you put it in the cup, or in the vases, precisely to avoid this stagnant water”, says Rémy Reuther, deputy mayor of Souffelweyersheim. Fighting against this invader, which continues to gain ground, has become a priority.

The tropical diseases it could transmit worry

Originally from Southeast Asia, it was reported for the first time in France in the South, in 2004. Since then, it has spread ever further, ever further North. 71 departments were affected in 2022. In Val-d’Oise, the tiger mosquito arrived two years ago. What worries are not only the nuisances, the painful stings, but also the tropical diseases that it could transmit, such as dengue fever, chikungunya, or even zika. Last year, the tiger mosquito was the cause of 60 cases of dengue in the south of France.
