Heat advisory for Miami-Dade, wind chill could climb to 107 degrees

MIAMI.- The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for this Friday in Miami-Dade County, effective from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

According to the weather agency, wind chills could range between 103 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two hours.

Officials said the combination of heat and humidity increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, classifying it as moderate to extreme risk. In the afternoon, some storms could form.

On Saturday, the weather will continue to feel summery across South Florida, with highs again in the mid 90s and wind chills expected to top 100 degrees. Isolated thunderstorms are also likely during the afternoon.

For Sunday, an increased chance of rain is expected with scattered storms and highs in the 90s.

This weather pattern will extend into Monday, when the chance of rain will be even higher. Temperatures will drop slightly early next week, staying in the 90s.

Light winds in the region will contribute to the feeling of heat, although they will be favorable for nautical and beach activities, according to weather prediction models.

Meanwhile, surf will remain around a foot and light surf is expected in Biscayne Bay. Additionally, the risk of rip currents will be low thanks to these light winds.

Tips for dealing with intense heat

  • Avoid direct contact with the sun between 11 am and 4 pm: During these hours, solar radiation is more intense. Seek shade or stay in cool places.
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing: Tight, dark clothing can retain heat. Opt for lightweight, light-colored clothing to help keep you cool.
  • Hydrate constantly: Carry a bottle of mineral water and drink regularly to avoid dehydration.
  • Eat fresh foods, fruits and vegetables: These foods will provide you with nutrients and help you stay hydrated.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) greater than 15: Protect your skin from damage caused by ultraviolet radiation.
  • Wear sunglasses and hats: These accessories will help protect your eyes and head from the sun.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages: Alcohol can increase dehydration.
  • Don’t stay in a vehicle with the windows closed: The temperature inside a car can rise quickly and be dangerous.

Remember that extreme heat can affect your health, causing heat stroke, fainting, dehydration and, in severe cases, heat stroke. Stay informed and take precautions to protect yourself during this heat wave.
