Hialeah Councilman Resigns to Run for County Tax Collector

MIAMI.- Bryan Calvo, in compliance with Florida law, announced his irrevocable resignation from the Hialeah council seat to run for the position of county tax collector in the primary elections next August.

“I would love to continue as a councilor, but obviously the law does not allow it,” Calvo declared this Tuesday, May 14, when making his resignation public.

“For me it is a bigger challenge to be able to fight for all of Miami-Dade County. I have fought for Hialeah very hard during the last two years. We have had successes on certain issues and I believe that now the fight has to be higher,” he said. the young politician.

Among the reasons given for opting for the position of tax controller, Calvo said that he considers it important that the city of Hialeah have representation in the constitutional offices that for the first time will be elected by voters.

In the November election, county voters will elect the sheriff, clerk of courts, supervisor of elections, property assessor and tax collector. As these are partisan elections, each party will choose its candidate in primary elections in August.

“I believe I am the only person from Hialeah who is running for one of these five offices. I believe that since Hialeah is the second largest city in the county, it is crucial that I be represented.”

The councilman indicated that he intends to make his resignation effective on November 1, “which will allow the City Council to replace my seat through the November elections. At the very least, I advocate that the Council and the mayor consider This option. Calvo should remain in office until November 2025.

Calvo, a Harvard-graduated lawyer, won his seat on the City Council in November 2021. For two years he had a very critical position with the mayor’s way of doing politics. He voted against the city budget and unsuccessfully sued Esteban Bovo for denying him the opportunity to investigate the operation of 911.
