NYPD: 5-year-old girl shot in the back while sitting in a car in the Bronx

NEW YORK — A 5-year-old girl was rushed to a New York City hospital Friday night after being shot in the back, police said.

The injured girl was reportedly in critical condition when first responders removed the girl from the scene of the shooting around 7 p.m. near White Plains Road and East 213rd Street in the Bronx.

Police officials said the girl was inside a car seat when she was shot in the back. It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting or who the intended target was.

The girl was reportedly in stable condition and remains hospitalized.

Investigators are conducting a neighborhood sweep, seeking to speak with potential witnesses and tracing video of the incident.
