National Pet Adoption Week: Here's How You Can Help

KANAB, UTAH –Best Friends Animal Society, una organization animal welfare leader and more than 600 shelters and rescues have come together for the purpose of national pet adoption week which takes place from June 30 to July 2.

During the three-day event, the community will have the opportunity to adopt a pet for free or low cost at a local shelter, rescue organization, and at our Best Friends pet rescue centers nationwide.

Adoptions will be free at our Best Friends rescue centers and programs located in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Houston, Northwest Arkansas, and Kanab, Utah. All pets will be spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go to their new home. In addition, several participating shelters and rescue groups will also be waiving or reducing adoption fees during these days.

Every day, more than 1,000 pets are euthanized in shelters across the United States because they are homeless. At Best Friends we work together with shelters and rescue organizations in your community to save more pets. Together, we can save them all.

Shelters across the country are seeing pet overpopulation and adoption numbers are not keeping pace, resulting in pets being euthanized for space.

Recent data published by Best Friends showed that in the year 2022, 378,000 dogs and cats were euthanized nationwide, largely due to a decline in dog adoptions.

“Adopting is crucial for animal welfare. It is possible to save all healthy shelter pets,” said Julie Castle, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society. “But shelters can’t do it alone. We need community members to come out and support their local shelters and rescues across the country.”

People can help save lives by choosing to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue group instead of buying from a breeder or store. If you can’t adopt right now, you can still help by neutering your pets, serving as a home, volunteering, or donating.

“Right now, there is a perfect dog or cat for your family waiting for a loving shelter home. By adopting from a local shelter or rescue organization, we can make the entire country No-Kill by 2025,” Castle said. “Right now, there is a perfect dog or cat for your family waiting for a loving shelter home. By adopting from a local shelter or rescue organization, we can make the entire country No-Kill by 2025,” Castle said.

By adopting a pet from a shelter, you save two lives: the one of the pet you adopted, and another that can now occupy its space inside the shelter.
