Hispanic becomes first immigrant executive director of The Miami Herald

In a historic moment that embodies the essence of the American DreamAlex Mena, a Nicaraguan immigrant who came to the United States at the age of 11, has taken the helm as executive director of two of Florida’s leading newspapers, The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Heraldo..

Mena started at The Miami Herald answering phone callsgradually rising through the ranks to become managing editor, and eventually earning the position of CEO for both The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald.

In her announcement on social media, Mena express his pride in stating: “Today is the day an immigrant’s American Dream comes true. And it is my dream. I am now the executive editor of the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald and the Florida regional editor for McClatchy (the publisher).”

Mena’s leadership has been praised by Monica Richardson, McClatchy’s vice president of local news, who praised her passion and commitment to serving Miami’s diverse communities.

Richardson emphasized that Mena is the ideal leader to uphold The Miami Herald’s tradition of journalistic excellence, according to an announcement from the same media.

Mena’s roots in Miami run deep. He is not only the first immigrant executive editor of The Miami Herald, but also the first graduate of Miami Dade College and Florida International University (FIU) to assume that role.

Beyond his role as CEO, Mena’s influence extends to his active involvement with professional journalism organizations. He currently serves as president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and holds the position of vice president of the Florida Society of News Editors.
