The Colombian Women’s National Team never tires of making history. In the early hours of this Sunday, those led by Nelson Abadía achieved an agonizing 2-1 victory against Germany and reached the round of 16 of the Australia and New Zealand 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Historic victory of the Colombian Women’s National Team
The match for Group H of the World Cup was played at the Sydney Football Stadium almost full of an enthusiastic audience, most of which cheered on the Colombians throughout the match.
With this result, added to Morocco’s surprise victory over South Korea, the definition of the group’s qualifiers for the round of 16 was left for the last date, August 3.

Linda Caicedo reappeared
Caicedo’s presence in the starting lineup cleared up doubts about his condition to face the match, after this week he lay down on the pitch in the middle of training due to fatigue.
The two teams exhibited contrasting styles: the game of skill and foot-to-foot transfers of the Colombians, as opposed to the physical, vertical and aerial game of the Germans.
Colombia sought to arm itself with the talent of Lady Andrade and Caicedo to connect Catalina Usme and the hard-working Mayra Ramírez.
Germany, meanwhile, sought to exploit the gaps between the lines in Colombia to enable their leading player, Alexandra Popp, their leading scorer.
With a simple and effective game in their lower half, the Germans played to recover the ball and mount attacks led by Lina Magull and Jule Brand in search of Popp, always guarded by the captain Daniela Montoya.
Although the first half passed with few scoring chances, the Germans had more control of the ball and greater territorial control, although the Colombian lower half got better at stopping the Europeans as the game progressed.
Popp had the clearest chance to score in the 42nd minute when he received an unmarked shot to the right of the Colombian goalkeeper, but his shot went over the crossbar.
Everything seemed to change in the second half when the magic of Caicedo appeared, who grabbed a rebound, maneuvered between two rivals inside the area and beat the lock with a well-placed shot.
The Germans, double World champions and favorites for the title, pressed the pins in search of equality, closing space on the Colombians and throwing long balls into the rival area, until the penalty fell at the end of the match.
When it seemed that the game would end tied, Vanegas’ goal fell for the 2-1 that unleashed madness among the Colombian players.
