Hogwarts Legacy is coming in about ten days, and we finally have a glimpse of what the adventure will look like. Amidst previews and debates, the game unfolds, and one element seems to particularly frustrate players.
The game that all fans have been waiting for? It seems to be going well!
Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy seems to be able to satisfy one of the most old dreams fans of Harry Potter : to propose a complete adventure not based on the moviesand which allows to step into the shoes of a fully personable student to explore the vast castle. The plot of the game developed by Avalanche will take place long before the birth of Harry Potter, since it will transport us to the end of the 19th century. Albus Dumbledore is, at this time, only a child, and Tom Jedusor, or rather Voldemort, does not yet exist.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t evil wizards or tensions in the magical world. The player character will face all of this, as he seems related to an ancient form of magic coveted, and that a goblin revolt prepares. Despite everything, we can explore the castle and its surroundings, solve many quests, take courses, fight, and unravel the mysteries of the mythical school.
Gamers and watchers were wary of the game due to the studio’s history and form of communication, but the previews swept away a number of doubts. You will have to go through the game as a whole to get a final opinion, but everything seems in place for the game to be a huge success when you see the scale of pre-ordersdespite the debates around the title and JK Rowling.
Playing a black mage without consequence, the detail that annoys players
However, and despite the players’ excitement, a newly unveiled element strongly annoys fans. We’ve known for a while that players will be able to learn and use the three unforgivable spells which are Avada Kedavra (death), Impero (control) and Cruciatus (torture). Many players have said to themselves that they were going to embody a wizard who goes wrong, with all the consequences that implies.
Previews have confirmed that this is possible, as GamesRadar mentioned indicated to have been able to throw explosive barrels on poachers, killing them. Unfortunately, we learned that Hogwarts Legacy will not incorporate any system of morality. Players will therefore be able to play a terrible black mage, but the game will not punish them for that :
It was important to us to give players who were looking to be a dark witch or wizard the opportunity to do so. Characters will visually and audibly react to seeing the player throw an unforgivable, but we don’t have a morality system that punishes them for doing so – that would be too critical (…). But, if the player continues these actions, the world will return the knowledge of these actions to him, indicated Kelly Murphy, lead designer.
Many players report being disappointed by the absence of this gauge of morality, which fatally limits the consequences of bad actions. For the studio, the important thing was to allow players to be free in their approach. It will therefore be possible to embody a black mage, but the consequences of actions should be reduced or at least indirect, whereas in the Harry Potter universe, these spells normally offer one-way travel to Azkaban Prison. Obviously, for the good of the game, this was not an option. That being said, the use of Unforgivable Curses and evil deeds will have an impact on the end of the gameas Moira Squier points out in our columns.
There are many choices to make throughout the game. Some are small and will just change the way certain characters will interact with you later in the game. black magic, which will change your choices in the end. So yes, your choices will impact the outcome of the story.
The absence of a morality gauge will therefore not not a direct impact and immediate on the progression, but playing a black mage will not remain without consequences. What to feel all powerful during the game before facing his destiny? Answer in a good ten days.
